Replace Skate Bearings Using a Pen

skate wheel diagramWhen you notice your wheels struggling to spin, it’s time to change your bearings.  Each wheel has one pair of bearings and swapping them out isn’t as difficult as you might think. A special tool sometimes referred to as a “bearing pusher” may be used but is not required. A small bolt or even a cheap ball point pen is often sufficient, depending on the diameter. To remove the bearings, simply push on the spacer. If your pen is too large, you will push against the spacer and the bearing and it won’t work. As you push on the spacer only, it will force the bearing (opposite the side your pushing) to pop out of the wheel. Once one bearing is out, the other is easy to remove.
