If you’re new to hockey and have trouble keeping up with a conversation because you’re confused by the slang, here’s a guide to help you.
Barn – Hockey Rink/Arena
Bender – A lousy player who always seems to have his ankles bent.
Between the Pipes – In the net.
Biscuit – A Puck.
Breezers – Hockey pants.
Brain Bucket (or just Bucket) – A helmet.
Celly – A celebration, usually done after scoring a goal
Coast to Coast – When a player carries the puck from his own net all the way to his opponent’s and scores.
Chippy – Getting irritated with one another, usually on the brink of fighting.
Chirp – To talk trash.
Cherry Picker – Player who hangs out in his opponents zone awaiting a long pass.
Dangle – Misdirecting an opponent while handling the puck. See deke.
Deke – A fake out, perhaps derived from the word “decoy”.
Drop – To leave the puck behind or pass it to a trailing teammate.
Gongshow – A rough, intense game.
Grinder – A player who digs deep, hustles to make plays.Usually better known for checking and disruption rather than scoring ability. Like a lineman in football, he works hard but rarely gets recognized for his hard work.
Enforcer – A player who takes on the role of discouraging the opposing team from harassing his goal scoring teammate by imposing the threat of physical harm.
Fisticuffs – A fight.
Five Hole – The area in between the goalie’s legs.Hash Marks – The lines coming out of the faceoff circles providing a guide to where players should be lined up.
Hat Trick – Scoring three goals in one game.
Hoser – A loser. Orginated from the pre-Zamboni days when the losing team had to hose off the ice.
Laser – A quick, well-placed shot.
Light the Lamp – Score a goal so the siren flashes.
Mucker – A physical player who lacks finesse but gets the job done by forechecking, working the boards, etc. He is not afraid to do the dirty work. Usually used interchangeably or in connection with grinder.
One-timer – Taking a hard shot right off the pass without pausing to receive it.
Pipe-fitter/Plumber – See mucker and grinder.
Playing the Point – When a defender positions himself in front of the blue line near the boards in order to keep the puck in his offensive zone.
Puck Bunny – A girl who is more interested in getting the player’s attention than watching the game.
Pylon – Skater who just stands still and is as easy to skate around as an orange cone.
Schoolyard Puck – Pick-up hockey often played in a schoolyard, usually on inline skates.
Shinny – Pick-up hockey usually played on a frozen pond.
Sieve – A goalie with a lot of “holes” meaning he allows a lot of goals.
Sin Bin – The penalty box.
Slapper – A slap shot.
Slot – The middle area in front of the net.
Sniper – Player with an accurate shot who often scores from a distance.
Top Shelf – To put a goal in the upper part of the net.
Tripod – A player who has to balance himself with his stick.
Woody – A wooden stick
Wrap around – To come from behind the net and squeeze it past the goalie.
Wrister – A wrist shot.

The term “cycle”…it is used often and I believe I know what it is yet EVERY Hockey term/phrase list does not offer a definition. How would you explain it to some one new to the sport?

We coined the phrase ‘tic-tac-toedrag’ which is basically either forehand-backhand-toedrag or backhand-forehand-backtoedrag, followed by a snipe into the opposite corner to the one you’d usually shoot at that angle. Great way to kill the goalie, and we kind of nicked the name from Gongshow, but we aren’t really getting the reco we want for that move!
Twig- wood stick
Twig is just a stick. It doesn’t have to be wood.
top cheese- sniping the top corners after a sick dangle
“going socks and undies” = top shelf
Duster- guy who sits on the bench and collects dust because coach never puts him in

I’ve usually only heard the phrase applied to baseball. It refers to an easy pop fly. It’s fairly similar to the phrase “piece of cake”. In hockey, it could refer to an easy glove save by the goalie.

Shinny- Also referred to as playing mini hockey on your knees and shins.
Puck Hog- A player that doesn’t pass the puck.
F1, F2, F3- Usually used in a practice for the three forwards on the ice
It could mean a couple things:
-A saucer pass
-Fancy or skillful
-Or like in the comment above, probably slik hair

“Honey Badger”, a player that never quits,never gives up and yes, “DOESN’T CARE”. He may take a beating in front of the net or in the corners, but he sees the bigger picture and is willing to take it for the greater good of the team and battles through!
Howitzer- Slapper from the point at a ridiculously fast speed but often misses the net.
Bender-Someone who skates on there ankles

Bar-diddly- when the puck hits the crossbar and goes in
Conky- concussion
Clapper- a hard slapshot

I remember the word “Boomer” referring to hockey players. Does anyone remember this? Or what it referred to? Because I do not.
Sex- A damn good shot

Salad protector= helmet
Goon= player whos main jobs are to fight,check and generally stir things up.
Apple= assist
Suckhole= player who waits near the red line in the neutral zone for a long pass, also known as cherry picking.
Mush Brain= a player who is concussion prone like Lindros or Crosby
Greasy goal= a goal that wasn’t particularly pretty, usually from a scrum in front of the net
Biscuit in the basket= puck in the net
Spinorama= when a player with the puck skates a tight 360 with the puck
Top Chedder/Top Ched= goal scored in one of the top corners
Sick Hands= when a player is a good puck handler with dirty dekes.
Soft Hands= when a player is a good puck handler and a great passer with finesse.
Pillows= a goalies leg pads
Netminder= goalie
Hockey Hair= long hair that flows beautifully & magnificently out of the helmet. See also Mullet
Gassed= when a player is tired during and after a shift
Shift= time when a player is on the ice, usually between 30-60 seconds
Snip Snip= when a player scores on a beauty wrist or slapshot, flat out beating the tendy
Cannonade-A very hard and heavy shot meaning heavy artillary attack to non hockey players

Dart- dumb
B-way – Breakaway, or whatever you want it to mean, can be used as an insult

Does anyone know what “marinara” means, i thought it was a nice pass but not sure.
Marinara is referring to marinara sauce, in hockey it refers to a filthy saucer pass because marinara is among the finest of sauces
